How to play

Get onto Rustorigin in about two minutes: download the launcher, run the installer, and drop into the 2021 build.

The launcher

Rustorigin Launcher

Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) · v1.2.5 · 3.2 MB

One small app syncs the exact 2021 build every server runs and keeps itself up to date. No sign-in, and the installer carries an official code-signing certificate, so Windows names Rustorigin as the publisher.

  • Code-signed, so Windows can tell the file has not been altered
  • Auto-updates so you always match the current server build
  • Server-side anti-cheat, backed by an active mod team
  • No manual file copying - it handles the 2021 build for you

Questions

Frequently asked

The questions we get asked most before you jump in.

The launcher will be available to download through our website and our Discord server.

One of the key differences is that our project uses an official, legitimate version of the game, unlike some alternatives that rely on modified or cracked builds. Our team is made up of passionate Rust players who simply want to bring back the feel and gameplay of that era, without many of the modern additions such as pay-to-win perks, excessive monetization, or intrusive in-game pop-ups. This project is built with the community, for the community.

Yes. Our servers run an anti-cheat system, supported by a moderation team ready to investigate and act on any suspicious behavior.

Yes. For legal reasons, you must own a legitimate copy of Rust on your Steam account in order to join our servers.

No. We want to stay true to the Rust experience of that era, so there are no purchasable items or features that provide any gameplay advantage. The only paid perks are Skip Queue and the SkinBox - Skip Queue grants access to the priority queue, and the SkinBox lets you apply skins via the /skinbox command. No competitive or gameplay advantages will ever be available for purchase.

Yes. Our project is hosted by a company with a strong reputation in the industry, and we've chosen to prioritize quality and stability over quantity to ensure the best possible experience for our players.

Absolutely. Our project is based on the April 2021 version of Rust (Devblog 240) to recreate an experience that's accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Whether you prefer to snowball, farm, explore, learn the game, or focus on PvP, you'll be able to play however you like.

Yes. A lot of people left the game by cheating when the recoil changed - we give everyone a chance, so come play legit and you're welcome here.

It will be announced on Discord alongside the vanilla server release.

The launcher needs elevated permissions to install and keep the 2021 build in sync on your machine, so Windows shows a User Account Control prompt when you run it. Accept it to continue. That prompt names Rustorigin as the verified publisher, because the installer is code-signed - and as always, only download it from our official channels.

Yes. The installer is signed with an official code-signing certificate, so Windows can confirm the file hasn't been altered since we built it and names Rustorigin as the publisher in the install prompt. Check for that name before you click through. Only download the launcher from this site or our Discord, since copies from anywhere else can be modified. A new signature takes a while to build up reputation with Microsoft SmartScreen, so you may still get a "not commonly downloaded" notice for a time - that is about how new the file is, not about what is in it.
